NVM image version on the Intel Ethernet 700 Series Network Adapters might be version 5.04 or 6.01. These versions are also compatible with the NIC driver associated on that same row above. These versions are also compatible with the NIC driver associated on that same row above. Identify NIC driver and supported driver version for ESXi server. August 12, 2014 April 15, 2014. Enable the Intel I217-V network card in VMware ESXi.

It will print out something like: # lspci -v grep Network -A1 00:00:19.0 Ethernet controller Network controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection [vmnic1] Class 0200: 8086:1502 -- 00:03:00.0 Ethernet controller Network controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection [vmnic0] Class 0200: 8086:10d3 The second row is interesting because in ESXi it should have a mapping to what driver it should use. /etc/vmware/driver.map.d # grep 1502 * e1001e.map:regtype=linux,bus=pci,id=8086:1502 0000:0000,driver=e1001e,class=network and there should also exist an entry in /etc/vmware/pci.ids: /etc/vmware # grep 10d3 pci.ids 10d3 82574L Gigabit Network Connection But if one is unable to install ESXi because of the NIC drivers one might not be able to edit those files. Also, I have no idea if this would really fix the problem but I will definitely check if this gets the second NIC working on ASRock Z87 Extreme6. Please let me know what the PCI IDs are on the ASUS Z97 Deluxe board! They are still available in ESXi 5.0/5.1 and thus in the VMware Online depot. So it is quite easy to create a customized ESXi 5.5 installation ISO that includes these ESXi 5.1 drivers (they still work with ESXi 5.5). Use my script for that, and run it like this:. ESXi-Customizer-PS-v2.3.ps1 -v55 -load net-r8168,net-r8169,net-sky2 This will cover the following adapters (PCI IDs): • net-r8168: Realtek 8168 Gigabit Ethernet (10ec:8168) • net-r8169: Realtek RTL-8110SC/8169SC Gigabit Ethernet (10ec:8167), Realtek RTL8169 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (10ec:8169) • net-sky2: Marvell 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (11ab:4354), Marvell 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (11ab:4362). This example will find a version of the driver that is newer than the one that ships with ESXi and thus supports some more Intel NICs (like the I217-LM and -V).

From Ubuntu Server 14.04 rescue mode, “lspci -v” on Asrock Z97 Extreme4 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (2) I218-V Subsystem: ASRock Incorporation Device 15a1 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 57 Memory at f7f00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K] Memory at f7f3c000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K] I/O ports at f080 [size=32] Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [d0] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+ Capabilities: [e0] PCI Advanced Features Kernel driver in use: e1000e. I have esxi 5.5 installed after adding vibs for sata and e1000e (2.3.2). The 15a1 device ID was not present in the e1000e drivers, so I also created a VIB to add them (per the procedure linked from your blog). At this time I can see the NIC in lspci but its not visible from ESXi user interface or esxcfg-nic (possibly the e1000e driver isn’t loading for it?). Hello, looks like having the same problem.

There are ways to add support for a NIC after ESXi has been installed. However, to install ESXi from the beginning requires at least one supported network controller.

JohnU 'booting it with 2 GB RAM will result in the false error message that no network adapter can be detected.' I wish I'd read the comments on this page earlier! I was used to editing upgrade_precheck.py to get ESXi to install with. Jaroslav Hello, thanks for a great website. I'm trying ESXi 6 on mini-itx motherboard Gigabyte GA-1037UN-EU and I have problem with built-in NICs.

If you cannot find your NIC's exact PCI ID in the V-Front Online Depot then you are almost out of luck. Proceed to step 5 then. Create your custom ESXi installation ISO If you have found a suitable driver for your NIC in the V-Front Online Depot then you can easily built a customized ESXi 5.5 installation ISO that includes this driver by running my script like this:. ESXi-Customizer-PS-v2.3.ps1 -v55 -vft -load net-e1000e This will build an ESXi installation ISO with the latest 5.5 patch level and (in this example) the community supported net-e1000e driver included.

Google is your friend If you haven't found anything in the V-Front Online Depot then there is still a small chance that someone has already created an ESXi driver for your device that I have not (yet) added to the V-Front Online Depot. The only way to find out is using your favorite Internet search engine! But please search specifically for a VMware ESXi driver for your NIC! Some people just search for a Linux driver in the false belief that you can use Linux drivers with ESXi. ESXi drivers can be derived from Linux drivers, but this involves modifying and re-compiling the source code, and packaging it into the appropriate format (VIB file or Offline Bundle)!

For now I found a workaround and used PowerCLI to create the custom image manually as described here: If somebody wants to try this please note that you will also get the WinError 10054 when using the VMWare online depot. So you need to download the ESXi offline bundle manually from the VMWare Website.

I had not found a way to pack a more recent version of neither the e1000e or igb driver. If I find more time to play with the Extreme6 I will attempt to try a later igb version. Good luck on the build and let me know how you did with the I211 driver. Best regards, Robert. Great question and very good investigation.

An example for ESXi 6.0 could look like this:. ESXi-Customizer-PS-v2.3.ps1 -v60 -vft -load net55-r8168 This will build an ESXi 6.0 installation ISO with the latest patch level and (in this example) the community supported up-to-date Realtek 8168 driver.
